Thanksgiving Cactus

Schlumbergera truncata

Cacti · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

Thanksgiving Cactus has flattened claw-edged stem segments bearing colourful tubular flowers. Its epiphytic habit calls for air around roots rather than heavy waterlogged soil.

Why you’ll love it

  • Claw-edged stem segments distinguish it from Christmas cactus.
  • Colourful tubular blooms can provide a late-autumn display.

A space where it can thrive

Grow year-round in a warm Metro Vancouver home, near suitable daylight and away from cold window glass, exterior-door drafts and heating vents.

Growing in a hanging basket

Allow the pointed-segment stems to arch naturally. Use bright indirect light and a draining mix; keep conditions steady while buds develop.

Use a container with drainage and a secure support rated for its fully watered weight. Check moisture at the root ball and empty collected drainage water.

Your care routine

Light

Bright indirect light; gentle morning sun is useful but avoid harsh summer midday sun.

Watering

Water when the surface begins to dry; thoroughly wet and drain without leaving the plant continuously soggy.

Soil & drainage

Very airy organic mix with bark and perlite; adapt container or mounting to the species.

Fertilizer

Use a complete liquid houseplant fertilizer about monthly while actively growing in spring and summer, at the product label rate. Pause in dim winter conditions or whenever growth stops; do not feed a dry or stressed plant.

Temperature

Around 18–24°C during active growth; modestly cooler autumn nights can support budding, but protect from cold drafts.

Humidity

Prefer moderate humid air around 50–60% with good circulation.

Through the seasons

In autumn, provide uninterrupted long dark nights and a modest cooler spell around 15–18°C to encourage buds. Once buds form, avoid abrupt moves or drying; give a short rest after flowering.

When your plant needs help

  • Bud drop can follow sudden temperature changes, relocation or dry roots.
  • Soft stem joints and rotten roots can result from excessive watering or stagnant mix.

Pets & little ones

Safety information needs confirmation; keep out of reach.
