String of Pearls

Curio rowleyanus

Succulents · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

String of Pearls has trailing fine stems threaded with spherical green leaves. Fleshy tissues retain water, making drainage particularly important.

Why you’ll love it

  • Spherical succulent leaves form bead-like trailing strands.
  • Long stems create a distinctive hanging basket silhouette.

A space where it can thrive

Grow year-round in a warm Metro Vancouver home, near suitable daylight and away from cold window glass, exterior-door drafts and heating vents.

Ask about availability

Availability, size, pot and price will be confirmed in store. Pictures illustrate the plant type.

Growing in a hanging basket

Give the crown plenty of light, use a gritty draining mix and let it dry between waterings. Keep the strings beyond the reach of children and pets.

Use a container with drainage and a secure support rated for its fully watered weight. Check moisture at the root ball and empty collected drainage water.

Your care routine

Light

Bright indirect light reaching the top of the pot as well as trailing stems; introduce gentle morning sun gradually.

Watering

Let the mix dry thoroughly, then water fully and drain; use pot weight as well as surface dryness.

Soil & drainage

Gritty cactus and succulent mix enriched with pumice or perlite in a draining pot.

Fertilizer

Use a cactus/succulent liquid fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during active spring/summer growth, at the product label rate. Do not feed during winter rest or while roots are dry.

Temperature

Aim for 18–26°C indoors; protect from sudden temperature changes and cold drafts.

Humidity

Average to low household humidity; maintain airflow and dry leaf surfaces.

Through the seasons

During darker Metro Vancouver autumn and winter days, check moisture before watering and lengthen the interval as growth slows. Reassess daylight in spring and repot only if roots crowd the container.

When your plant needs help

  • Stretched pale growth indicates insufficient light.
  • Blackened soft bases suggest rot from prolonged moisture.

Pets & little ones

Do not allow children or pets to chew or ingest this plant; potentially harmful plant tissues are present. Keep out of reach and seek professional advice after ingestion.
