Sweetheart Hoya

Hoya kerrii

Climbers & vines · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

Sweetheart hoya produces thick heart-shaped leaves on a climbing vine. A single rooted leaf without a stem node may survive but never develop a growing vine.

Why you’ll love it

  • Heart-shaped succulent leaves make a recognizable close-up feature.
  • A stem-bearing plant can be trained as a climbing vine.

A space where it can thrive

Grow year-round in a warm Metro Vancouver home, near suitable daylight and away from cold window glass, exterior-door drafts and heating vents.

Growing in a hanging basket

Choose an established Hoya kerrii vine with growing nodes, not a single rooted leaf. Give bright light and allow the airy mix to dry partly before watering.

Use a container with drainage and a secure support rated for its fully watered weight. Check moisture at the root ball and empty collected drainage water.

Your care routine

Light

Bright indirect light; introduce gentle morning sun gradually where tolerated.

Watering

Let most of the potting mix dry before soaking and draining; test below the surface.

Soil & drainage

Free-draining potting mix with added perlite or pumice; never use a sealed pot.

Fertilizer

Use a complete liquid houseplant fertilizer about monthly while actively growing in spring and summer, at the product label rate. Pause in dim winter conditions or whenever growth stops; do not feed a dry or stressed plant.

Temperature

Aim for 18–26°C indoors; protect from sudden temperature changes and cold drafts.

Humidity

Ordinary room humidity is usually sufficient; do not mist to compensate for wet roots.

Through the seasons

Reduce watering and pause feeding in weak winter light. Retain old flower spurs, as later blooms may grow from the same sites; give a climbing support as stems extend.

When your plant needs help

  • Soft yellow growth can signal overwatering and root rot.
  • Mealybugs can hide in leaf axils; check for white waxy clusters.

Pets & little ones

Safety information needs confirmation; keep out of reach.
