Keep shallow roots steadily supplied with moisture while bulbs expand. Reduce watering as bulbs mature.
Loose, fertile, well-drained soil with minimal weed competition.
Plan sowing for the crop’s preferred season. Protect young plants and containers from severe frost; local conditions affect timing.
Start seedlings or direct sow for the appropriate long-day bulb season; thin plants to give bulbs room.
Lift fresh scallions once the stems are large enough to use. This bunching type is not harvested and cured as a dry storage bulb.
Repeat sowings from spring into autumn. Lightly hill the stems for a longer pale base; protect a winter crop from severe cold.
This guide covers a cultivated garden crop. Confirm the identity and the edible part before harvesting; wash produce and keep unverified plants away from children and pets.
