Your care routine

Light

Full sun in an open position.

Watering

Water regularly while the permanent roots establish; avoid waterlogged trenches.

Soil & drainage

A deep, well-drained, compost-enriched permanent bed.

Temperature

Plan sowing for the crop’s preferred season. Protect young plants and containers from severe frost; local conditions affect timing.

Planting

Plant seedlings about 45 cm apart with wide paths. This is a long-term crop, not a quick annual vegetable.

Harvest

Do not take a normal spear harvest until the third growing season. Leave later shoots to develop into ferns and replenish roots.

Through the seasons

Let healthy ferns grow through summer. Remove dead fern growth at the end of the season; protect and mulch the root zone.

When your plant needs help

  • Give the permanent roots several seasons to establish before a normal spear harvest; keep summer ferns intact.

Pets & little ones

This guide covers a cultivated garden crop. Confirm the identity and the edible part before harvesting; wash produce and keep unverified plants away from children and pets.
