Water deeply during dry spells, especially at tasseling and silk emergence.
A warm, fertile bed with good drainage.
Prepare the bed with mature compost. This crop benefits from adequate nutrition during active growth; follow a suitable vegetable fertilizer label and your soil test rather than adding an arbitrary dose.
Frost-tender crop: start with warmth and move outside only after cold weather has passed.
Direct sow once soil warms. Plant several short rows in a block for wind pollination, rather than one isolated row.
Allow ears and their pink kernels to mature and dry; remove dry kernels for popping. Do not harvest at the milky stage used for sweet corn.
Provide a warm long season, block planting and separation from incompatible corn flowering. Finish drying ears away from autumn rain.
This guide covers a cultivated garden crop. Confirm the identity and the edible part before harvesting; wash produce and keep unverified plants away from children and pets.
