Water deeply during dry spells, especially at tasseling and silk emergence.
A warm, fertile bed with good drainage.
Prepare the bed with mature compost. This crop benefits from adequate nutrition during active growth; follow a suitable vegetable fertilizer label and your soil test rather than adding an arbitrary dose.
Frost-tender crop: start with warmth and move outside only after cold weather has passed.
Direct sow once soil warms. Plant several short rows in a block for wind pollination, rather than one isolated row.
For sweet corn, pick ears when silks brown and the kernels give milky juice when pressed.
Keep different corn types separated in space or flowering time when cross-pollination affects eating quality. Poor pollination leaves gaps in ears.
This guide covers a cultivated garden crop. Confirm the identity and the edible part before harvesting; wash produce and keep unverified plants away from children and pets.
