Studio illustration. Appearance varies with age, variety and growing conditions.
Full sun in an open position.
Water deeply at the roots during dry weather, especially as fruit expands.
Warm, rich, well-drained garden soil with substantial room for spreading vines.
Prepare the bed with mature compost. This crop benefits from adequate nutrition during active growth; follow a suitable vegetable fertilizer label and your soil test rather than adding an arbitrary dose.
Frost-tender crop: start with warmth and move outside only after cold weather has passed.
Start indoors in individual pots or direct sow after soil warms. Avoid root disturbance and provide pollinator access.
Cut fruit when the rind is hard and the stem is mature; leave a sound stem and harvest before damaging frost.
Keep ripening fruit off wet ground. Large-fruited varieties need much more space than the nursery pot in the illustration.
This guide covers a cultivated garden crop. Confirm the identity and the edible part before harvesting; wash produce and keep unverified plants away from children and pets.
