Meet your green friend.

Desert is a dark, lightly speckled zucchini on productive plants.

A space where it can thrive

Grow as a cultivated garden crop in a bed or suitably sized container. The illustrated nursery pot is a presentation, not a recommendation for the mature plant’s root space.

Your care routine

Light

Full sun in an open position.

Watering

Water deeply and regularly as fruit develops, at the soil rather than over the foliage.

Soil & drainage

Warm, compost-enriched, well-drained soil with ample space.

Fertilizer

Prepare the bed with mature compost. This crop benefits from adequate nutrition during active growth; follow a suitable vegetable fertilizer label and your soil test rather than adding an arbitrary dose.

Temperature

Frost-tender crop: start with warmth and move outside only after cold weather has passed.

Planting

Sow or transplant after soil warms; protect young plants from cold, then allow pollinator access at flowering.

Harvest

Pick immature summer fruit while the skin is tender. Black Beauty and Desert are zucchini; Sunburst is a small yellow pattypan.

Through the seasons

Remove oversized summer fruit to maintain production. For winter types, allow sufficient time for fruit to ripen before frost.

When your plant needs help

  • Pick young tender summer fruit frequently, and stagger plantings instead of letting the first crop become overgrown.

Pets & little ones

This guide covers a cultivated garden crop. Confirm the identity and the edible part before harvesting; wash produce and keep unverified plants away from children and pets.
