Cape Primrose

Streptocarpus saxorum

Tropical & indoor plants · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

Cape primrose trails small fuzzy leaves and produces delicate violet tubular flowers. Adequate daylight supports flowering without the need for strong direct sun.

Why you’ll love it

  • Small leaves and violet tubes create a delicate trailing display.
  • Flexible stems suit an elevated or hanging container.

A space where it can thrive

Grow year-round in a warm Metro Vancouver home, near suitable daylight and away from cold window glass, exterior-door drafts and heating vents.

Indoor hanging plant

Growing in a hanging basket

This basket uses trailing Streptocarpus saxorum. Give bright filtered light, an airy mix and water when the top centimetre begins to dry.

Use a container with drainage and a secure support rated for its fully watered weight. Check moisture at the root ball and empty collected drainage water.

Your care routine

Light

Bright filtered window light; protect flowers and soft foliage from strong midday sunshine.

Watering

Water as the top centimetre begins to dry; keep the crown clear of standing water and drain the pot.

Soil & drainage

Light indoor flowering-plant mix with perlite; do not compress around delicate roots.

Fertilizer

Use a complete liquid houseplant fertilizer about monthly while actively growing in spring and summer, at the product label rate. Pause in dim winter conditions or whenever growth stops; do not feed a dry or stressed plant.

Temperature

Aim for 18–26°C indoors; protect from sudden temperature changes and cold drafts.

Humidity

Moderate humidity with airflow; avoid wetting fuzzy foliage repeatedly.

Through the seasons

During darker Metro Vancouver autumn and winter days, check moisture before watering and lengthen the interval as growth slows. Reassess daylight in spring and repot only if roots crowd the container.

When your plant needs help

  • Sparse blooms and elongated growth can indicate insufficient light.
  • Crown rot can follow water pooling among the basal leaves.

Pets & little ones

Safety information needs confirmation; keep out of reach.
