Blue Star Fern

Phlebodium aureum

Ferns · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

Blue Star Fern has blue-green irregularly lobed fronds over furry rhizomes. Its fronds are sensitive to repeated drying of the root ball.

Why you’ll love it

  • Blue-green lobed fronds provide an unusual foliage colour.
  • Exposed furry rhizomes add a second point of interest.

A space where it can thrive

Grow year-round in a warm Metro Vancouver home, near suitable daylight and away from cold window glass, exterior-door drafts and heating vents.

Ask about availability

Availability, size, pot and price will be confirmed in store. Pictures illustrate the plant type.

Indoor hanging plant

Growing in a hanging basket

Use a loose, draining mix and indirect light. Keep the creeping rhizomes at the surface, with moisture around the roots rather than standing water.

Use a container with drainage and a secure support rated for its fully watered weight. Check moisture at the root ball and empty collected drainage water.

Your care routine

Light

Filtered bright daylight; shield fronds from hot direct sun.

Watering

Keep mix evenly lightly moist; water as the surface approaches dryness, then drain completely.

Soil & drainage

Airy organic mix with bark and perlite; leave the furry rhizomes exposed at the surface.

Fertilizer

Use a complete liquid houseplant fertilizer about monthly while actively growing in spring and summer, at the product label rate. Pause in dim winter conditions or whenever growth stops; do not feed a dry or stressed plant.

Temperature

Aim for 18–26°C indoors; protect from sudden temperature changes and cold drafts.

Humidity

Prefer humid air, roughly 50–65%, with ventilation; heated winter rooms can be challenging.

Through the seasons

During darker Metro Vancouver autumn and winter days, check moisture before watering and lengthen the interval as growth slows. Reassess daylight in spring and repot only if roots crowd the container.

When your plant needs help

  • Brown crisp fronds often follow dry air or missed watering.
  • Scale or mealybugs may colonize fronds and rhizomes; inspect closely.

Pets & little ones

Safety information needs confirmation; keep out of reach.
