Bird's Nest Fern

Asplenium nidus

Ferns · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

Bird's Nest Fern has broad wavy undivided green fronds forming a central rosette. Its fronds are sensitive to repeated drying of the root ball.

Why you’ll love it

  • Whole wavy fronds create a bold bowl-shaped rosette.
  • Undivided leaves offer a different texture from feathery ferns.

A space where it can thrive

Grow year-round in a warm Metro Vancouver home, near suitable daylight and away from cold window glass, exterior-door drafts and heating vents.

Your care routine

Light

Filtered bright daylight; shield fronds from hot direct sun.

Watering

Keep root mix lightly moist; water around the outside of the rosette, never into the central crown.

Soil & drainage

Organic indoor mix with perlite; avoid dense garden soil and buried rhizomes.

Fertilizer

Use a complete liquid houseplant fertilizer about monthly while actively growing in spring and summer, at the product label rate. Pause in dim winter conditions or whenever growth stops; do not feed a dry or stressed plant.

Temperature

Aim for 18–26°C indoors; protect from sudden temperature changes and cold drafts.

Humidity

Prefer humid air, roughly 50–65%, with ventilation; heated winter rooms can be challenging.

Through the seasons

During darker Metro Vancouver autumn and winter days, check moisture before watering and lengthen the interval as growth slows. Reassess daylight in spring and repot only if roots crowd the container.

When your plant needs help

  • Brown crisp fronds often follow dry air or missed watering.
  • Scale or mealybugs may colonize fronds and rhizomes; inspect closely.

Pets & little ones

Safety information needs confirmation; keep out of reach.
