English Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia

Perennials · Planned variety

Meet your green friend.

A small woody perennial with narrow silver-green leaves and fragrant purple flower spikes. English lavender forms a compact mound suitable for sunny edging and containers.

Why you’ll love it

  • Fragrant flowers add colour beside paths.
  • Flowers provide forage for visiting bees.

A space where it can thrive

Outdoors in an open, sunny bed or draining container.

Your care routine

Light

Full sun, ideally at least six hours daily.

Watering

Water new plants through their first summer; established beds need water chiefly during prolonged drought. Let container soil dry somewhat between thorough waterings.

Soil & drainage

Lean, freely draining soil; avoid heavy wet clay. Use a raised bed where drainage is poor.

Fertilizer

Usually none; if a container needs feeding, use a general-purpose fertilizer once in spring at its label rate, avoiding excessive nitrogen.

Temperature

A cold-hardy lavender type, but cultivar, exposure and container roots affect winter survival; check the plant label.

Humidity

Prefer airy conditions; do not mist.

Through the seasons

In Metro Vancouver, keep roots out of winter saturation and shelter pots from persistent rain. Trim after flowering without cutting into bare old wood; select a locally hardy cultivar.

When your plant needs help

  • Root rot in wet winter soil: improve drainage.
  • Bare woody growth: trim lightly annually; old plants may need replacement.

Pets & little ones

ASPCA lists English lavender as toxic to cats and dogs; ingestion can cause nausea or vomiting. Keep pets and children from eating ornamental plants; do not present this plant or its oils as a remedy.
