Your care routine

Light

Full sun in an open position.

Watering

Water while establishing and through prolonged dry spells; avoid standing water.

Soil & drainage

Ordinary, well-drained soil with generous space for broad hairy leaves.

Temperature

Plan sowing for the crop’s preferred season. Protect young plants and containers from severe frost; local conditions affect timing.

Planting

Direct sow about 1 cm deep. Thin to roughly 60 cm; its taproot makes later transplanting difficult.

Harvest

Enjoy the flowers as a pollinator display. This care guide does not recommend ingesting this plant.

Through the seasons

Remove fading flowers before seed forms if you want to limit self-seeding. Support large plants if exposed to wind.

When your plant needs help

  • Give the wide plant generous space and remove seed heads if unwanted seedlings are a problem.

Pets & little ones
